Step by step - your successful path to a driver's license

1. Emergency aid course

If you already have a category B, B1, A or A1 driver's license, you no longer need to submit the emergency helper's certificate. The emergency helper course can be taken one month before your 16th or 15th birthday and is valid for a maximum of 6 years. In most cases, the course lasts 10 hours and is split over two days, often at the weekend or in the evening. Holders of a driving license in one of the above-mentioned categories as well as doctors, dentists, veterinarians, nursing staff with a diploma or certificate of competence, instructors of emergency assistance courses, etc. (in accordance with Article 10, paragraph 5, letters b - e, VZV) are exempt from attending the course.

2. Applying for a learner's permit

3. Eye test

The list of recognized opticians and ophthalmologists for the eye test can be accessed using the QR code on the application form. The learner's permit and a valid identity card must be taken to the eye test. The result will be entered directly on the learner's permit. The eye test is then valid for 2 years. If you submit another learner driving application after the 2 years have expired, a new eye test is required.

Good to know: Anyone who already has a learner's permit or driving license and wants to acquire a new category of permit no longer has to take an additional eye test (valid from March 1, 2024 for newly issued learner's permits). Permit holders must always meet the vision requirements.

4. Submit a learner's permit application

You must now submit the completed learner's permit application in person to the residents' registration office in your municipality of residence or directly to the Road Traffic Office.

Don't forget: Enclose a current color passport photo and, if required, a valid original emergency aid certificate, as well as an identity card or passport for the interview. Foreign nationals also require an original residence permit.

Good to know: The learner's permit application can be submitted to the Road Traffic Office at the earliest two months before you reach the minimum age. A new photo is required for every learner's permit application, even if you have already submitted a learner's permit application or are already in possession of a driving license. A photo booth is located in the Road Traffic Office at the main entrance. Only automatic photos or photos taken by a photographer are permitted. Self-printed PC photos will be rejected.

3. Basic theory test

Once your learner driver application has been approved, you will receive your registration for the basic theory test by post within 5-10 days and can arrange a test date online in eDispo. The access code is valid for two years. Now you need to prepare for the upcoming basic theory test (with an app to download, CD-Rom or online - make sure you use asa-tested questions). The basic theory test is carried out on the tablet (language of your choice: D, F, I, E) and contains 50 questions, which you have 45 minutes to answer. You can achieve a total of 150 points. You are allowed a maximum of 15 mistakes. Please note: the asa has only published 66% of all available questions. If you already have a category B, A or A1 driving license, you are exempt from the basic theory test.

Good to know: The minimum age is 17 years. The basic theory test can be taken at the earliest 1 month before reaching the minimum age. You can find a large selection of learning materials for the basic theory test in the app store for download, in specialist shops or on the Internet. The Road Traffic Office of the Canton of Zug does not recommend or sell any learning materials.

4. Obtaining a learner's permit

The learner's permit is valid for a limited period of 4 months. Don't miss it: You must now complete the compulsory basic motorcycle course within this period.

5. Basic motorcycle course

The practical exercises are the prerequisite for safe control of the motorcycle or scooter and form the basis for further training on the road. The basic course (4 x 3 hours) must be completed within four months of issuing the learner's license. Exception: Holders of category A1 before 01.01.2021 only have to attend course part 3 (4 hours). After that, your learner's license will be extended by a further 12 months. Start your basic motorcycle course now and take a big step towards your motorcycle license!

6. Traffic safety lessons (VKU)

In order to be admitted to the driving test, you must first attend the mandatory Traffic safety course (VKU) at a driving school. I recommend that you attend the VKU as soon as possible so that you can immediately apply what you have learned in your driving lessons. A valid learner's license is a prerequisite. Exception: If you already have a category A, A1 or B1 driving license, you no longer need to attend the traffic studies course.

Don't miss out - Attend your traffic safety lessons (VKU) at our driving school within a short walking distance of Zug train station.  REGISTER NOW >>

7. Motorcycle driving lessons

Once you have completed the basic motorcycle course, you can prepare for the practical driving test with private practice rides and also register for the practical driving test yourself. However, for a successful driving test, I recommend that you have your driving skills checked in good time by an experienced motorcycle driving instructor. I offer you personalized driving training - whether as preparation for your driving test, as a seasonal return to riding or simply as further training for more fun and safety on the road. Each lesson is tailored to you in order to make progress as efficiently as possible. I will show you important tips and tricks so that you are always safe on the road in demanding traffic. This way, you'll be well prepared and have a good feeling when you take your practical driving test - so that you can greet the expert with confidence and say goodbye with a smile on your face.

8. Practical driving test

The practical test is divided into two parts: a maneuver test and a driving test in traffic. Keep calm so that you can approach the driving test in a relaxed manner. During the driving test, you have to prove to the examiner that you not only have sufficient theoretical knowledge, but that you can also drive the motorcycle safely on the road. He will give you various instructions that you must follow and implement in good time. If you have done everything correctly, you will receive a driving license for the tested motorcycle category. There are no motorcycle driving tests during the winter months. Please note the requirements for motorcycle protective clothing.

9. The WAB course

All new drivers with a temporary probationary driving license are subject to compulsory further training. The advanced training course (WAB) lasts one day. New drivers with a category B (car) or category A (motorcycle) license are free to choose whether they wish to complete the WAB course on a motorcycle or in a car. Important: The WAB course must be completed in the first year after passing the driving test. This applies to all those who passed their driving test after 01.01.2020. All new drivers who passed their driving test before 01.01.2020 must complete the WAB course by the expiration date (point 4b on the driving license) at the latest.

Good to know: If you forget to attend the WAB course in the first year of your probationary period, you can expect a fine of up to CHF 300.00 if you are stopped by the police. If you are unable to attend a WAB course in the first year of your probationary period, the deadline can be extended if there is a demonstrable and weighty reason. If you have not attended the WAB course by the time your probationary driving license expires, you are immediately no longer entitled to drive. Contact the Road Traffic Office immediately so that you can catch up on the course.

My tip: Plan your training early and attend your WAB course at the TCS Touring Club Schweiz (discount for TCS members), VAZ-TCS Verkehrsausbildungszentrum in Erstfeld (courses also available in English), Eventcenter Seelisberg AG (price tip) or at  WAB Zentralschweiz in Ruswil and take a few friends with you - because it's simply more fun together.

You can find more information and other course organizers for the WAB course at www.2-Phasen.ch

10. The definitive driver's license

Congratulations - you have achieved your goal! At the end of the probationary period (at least 3 years), you will receive your permanent driving license directly from the Road Traffic Office. A valid probationary driver's license and timely attendance of the mandatory WAB course are required.

My tip: In your own interest, always follow the recommendation: “Never overestimate your own abilities and always ride with foresight and defensively.”  I hope you continue to have fun and enjoy riding your motorcycle - and always have a safe and accident-free ride.
